What's My Stats?

Romans 14:12

"Yes, each of us will give a personal account to God".

Back in my high school days, I was the statistician for the guys basketball team. The Heritage Conquerors, that was our team name. I've always been intrigued with basketball, which probably has a lot to do with one of the many reasons I married the big guy (Bret), the man of my dreams. LOL When I first met Bret, he would eat, sleep and breathe basketball. At the beginning of our marriage, I can't even remember how many teams he played on? :) We had games at least four times every week!

As the statistician for the Conquerors, I needed to have the reports for each game up to date and precise. If I missed even one assist, you better believe that the guys would know it. There were a few perks to keeping the stats. The biggest one was that I was able to get out of class early on most of the away games, because I traveled with the team. I loved that! Especially if it was math class! I hated math. Another perk ... I was dating the captain of the team. Always a good perk! But I was honest regarding his stats.

After every game, the guys would pour up in line, wanting to know how many assists they had, how many foul shots they made, how many turnovers took place and how many points did they score? The list goes on and on! That was probably the beginning for my love of basketball. I actually understand the game, which is not the case at all for me with football! I don't think I will ever understand football.

Now, why did I just tell you all about my statistician days? Well, believe it or not, I actually have a spiritual analogy to my story. Here it is. Many times we go through life on auto pilot. We get up every morning and do the same things over and over again. We have a certain schedule or format we follow on a daily basis. But as we go through each day, what are we doing for God? Do we make it a priority to spend time with Him?

How are we reaching people in the marketplace? The marketplace isn't just the workplace. Do we go to the store and never speak to anyone, but quickly get our items, stand in line and then grumble and complain that the line is too long and leave? How many of us take the time to speak to strangers, or even our neighbors? Are we so focused on our own little part of the world, that we fail to see the Harvest?

When we stand before God, we will give account for what we've done, and what we failed to do. What's your stats? How many times do you speak to someone in the store that you don't know? How many times do you go out of your way to take the cart back to it's proper place, instead of leaving it next to your car? How many times have you helped someone, who dropped their groceries as they were putting them in to the car? Do you help out ... or do you proceed to your car and just leave?

I've seen people, (who I happen to know profess to be Christians) stand in a return line and argue and carry on with a clerk by being very nasty in their attitude. Will that person take account before God for that? I believe so. The way we conduct ourselves is a very important matter to consider. How do we treat people outside of church? Do we act one way at church and quite another in the marketplace?

I know to many of you, these are trivial things to consider. But I really don't believe they are trivial to God. We are the light of the world. Our light shines in the darkness and the darkness has to flee. But if we walk around and act-talk and project ourselves to be just like the world ... how will people see the difference between Christians and the World? They won't. They will get a false identity of who we represent. We represent Christ.

Just something for all of us to think about ...
Be blessed,
Tracy :)
